Apple’s Macworld Keynote Unveils DRM-Free iTunes Plans

Apple’s last MacWorld keynote speech brought with it a new MacBook Pro, but it also had a few things to appeal to the iPhone crowd.

First off, iPhone 3G owners will now be able to download music from the iTunes store over the 3G network at no extra cost.

The second, and more amazing development is with the iTunes Store itself. In April it will roll out a three tiered pricing system, with songs costing $0.69, $0.99, and $1.29 depending on age and popularity. I assume this concession to the music industry was made to achieve the second new development, more DRM free music. As of today, much more music has been included in the iTunes Plus program. By the end of this quarter, the entire iTunes library will go DRM free.

Update: Though it was reported that over the air iTunes downloads would work on 3G, I’ve had no problem using it on EDGE as well.
