The Weather Channel Does iPhone Weather Right

While I think Apple designed a great product with the iPhone, there are a few  things that frustrate me. High on that list is the weather application. It was great to be able to quickly pull up the temperatures throughout the next few days, but it really lacked in details. Telling me that it’s going to snow tomorrow doesn’t really help me much if I don’t have any idea if it’ll be just a dusting or a major storm. Instead, I often found myself checking online for better reports.

Now, with the Weather Channel iPhone application, I have a better option available. Not only can I get the basic 10 day forecast, but also detailed hourly and 36 hour reports. Gone are the days of not knowing how much snow or rain is coming tomorrow, it even gives breaks down the amount overnight and during the day. You can pull up a map with a Doppler overlay showing where storms are.

Still not enough to convince you? How about tossing in the ability to view a clip of The Weather Channels’ most recent forecast for your region? And, of course, the app also serves up local severe weather alerts.

The only downside is that I can’t uninstall the Apple weather app.

True it beats the inbuilt app but what you guys need is a *real* weather app. The Weather Channel app does a pretty good job for us Australians but it has its limitations.

Us here in Australia have a brilliantly designed weather app that pulls its data from the local Bureau of Meteorology – the Government weather forecasting service. The problem with all the other applications is that the data comes from private weather stations which are generally pretty good but not always accurate and the forecasting is somewhat hit and miss.

The OzWeather app though is always accurate and the forecasting much more reliable. It has the current temp, multiple cities, and also the BOM radar. It is one of the top apps in the Australian store – and deservedly so.

I have to say I like the Weather Channel app. Much more informative than the built in app. I also have the WeatherBug app, but I use the the Weather Channel app most often.

I’ve had this app installed since it first appeared in the app store and I agree that it’s pretty good. I still use the built-in weather app, though. I check the built-in app first and then go to the weather channel app when I want more info.

One thing this app needs, however, is an animated map.

The question I want to know is – why can none of these weather apps update the icon on the menu to one that’s relevant? It’s no use looking to see it’s 23 and sunny every day as it never is!

The accuweather app is pretty good- has animated doplar map, natl’ weather service alerts, etc. Only bummer is the hourly forecast is only for 5 hours and extended only for 5 days, and a similar lack of detail on the home page- won;t tell you how muich snow, etc. until you look at the 5-day page. Think I’ll try the weather channel one though.
