Mophie has recently announced a new external battery for the iPhone — the Juice Pack Air. This latest addition to their product lineup is not only an external battery, but also a case, it has also been described as “the worlds thinnest” external battery case.
However, putting aside the measurements, the Juice Pack Air will offer up to an additional 270 hours in standby mode, 4.5 hours of 3G talk-time, 9 hours of 2G talk-time, 4.5 hours of 3G Internet use, 5.4 hours of Wi-Fi use, 20 hours of audio playback and 6 hours of video playback. For those looking for a comparison to the current Juice Pack 3G, the Juice Pack Air will offer slightly less extra power, of course it does offer full case protection.
Additionally, the Juice Pack Air also features an “innovative standby mode” that allows the user to determine when the extra power gets used. It also features the 4-LED indicator lights that current Juice Pack users have become familiar with. The Juice Pack Air also ships with a USB cable and has a USB ports that allows the user to charge both their Juice Pack and iPhone at the same time.
The Juice Pack Air is currently up for pre-order and is expected to be available in the Spring of 2009. It is retailing for $79.95 and will be available in your choice of black, white or purple. As a current Juice Pack 3G user, this latest announcement sounds like great news, now I just have to decide on which color to pre-order.

I’m glad it will also work for the 2G iPhone! It seems new developers think we all just threw them out when the 3G was released by the way they just make new items for the 3G and forget the 2G? Thanks morphie, BTW, Where and when can we ore-order?

I dont think it says it works with the first gen iphone and the second. I think it works only with the second gen or 3G iphone.

What the article does not say it that the USB cable is not standard. It’s not a mini usb plug. So if you forget your cable or lose it, your in trouble.
Also, you have to buy it to know this detail because it’s not mentionned anywhere and of course the Apple store won’t take it back if it’s open. BEWARE!
It’s a no go for me.

For what it’s worth, I got the juice pack air as soon as it came out. As aBud said, beware of the cable – it is not a standard mini-usb cable! I was a little surprised by this and after trying to jam a standard mini-usb cable into it for about 5 minutes, I finally looked at the original. Oops!
Anyway, (and yes, this is true), my dogs ate mine so I have to buy a new one. It was worth it the first time – it’ll be worth it again…

I came across the Juice Pack while searching for a boost pack option to extend the life of my phone on the go. It’s not a panacea if you’re a heavy user, but for me it’s a much more elegant solution for the quick drain time I experience while constantly accessing the iPhone’s rich features, than being constantly tethered to a cord and some sort of power source.
The case is extremely sturdy, and looks good. It does feel like it at least doubles the weight and bulk of the phone, but I’m used to carrying around bricks, so that wasn’t an issue for me — and even with the added bulk it’s nothing excessive for anyone other than those who insist any additional size and weight is unappealing.
If you’re price sensitive, or if the extra bulk is a turnoff, go with one of the many booster pack options for half the price. For me, I can’t imagine a product that better fits my needs — other an even more powerful battery! Oh, I haven’t seen the purple case available in retail. Just the black or white ones.
