Rumor: Kindle ebook support coming to the iPhone

It seems that in addition to the announcement of the Kindle 2 earlier today, Jeff Bezos also mentioned something called WhisperSync. While that term sounds really fancy, it actually does something pretty cool. WhisperSync will allow you to sync where you stopped reading between multiple devices.

It works based on your registered account with Amazon and in theory would benefit someone who had two Kindles. Of course, given the fact that most people are not going to have and use two Kindles, WhisperSync will also allow a sync with other devices. Jeff Bezos did not go into detail about just what other devices were, although he did specify them as “mobile devices.” It was also confirmed that at least some of those mobile devices were a little more specifically — cellphones.

Now, this is where the rumor portion comes in, most people are speculating that the iPhone will be included as one of those cellphones. Personally, the iPhone sounds like a great match, plenty of storage space, and as we have seen with other iPhone ebook apps, a nice sized display for reading. It also has (for some) a nice 3G connection that will enable a fast download of an ebook. As a current Kindle owner, this sounds like it would be enough to fully convince me that my iPhone is a good device for reading. Now I would always be able to read that same book, and as a bonus always have it remember my place thanks to that WhisperSync.
