Could we be seeing some further proof that the iPhone 3G is not selling well over in Japan? SoftBank, who is the official carrier in Japan has recently begun a new campaign that is giving away 8GB iPhones for free. The campaign has been dubbed “iPhone for everybody” and simply requires the user to sign a two-year agreement in order to get an iPhone for free.
Additionally, if you are not satisfied with the 8GB model, you can opt to get a 16GB instead. Of course, that comes with a slight catch, the 16GB model is not free. Those who choose the 16GB iPhone will have to pay ¥480 (about $5 US) a month for the life of the contract. In other words, the 16GB model will cost around $120 US, which is still a pretty nice deal.
SoftBank is also lowering the price of their maximum rate data plans from ¥5985 (around $62 US) to just ¥4410 (around $46 US).
