Turn-by-turn directions now available for the iPhone, if you are willing to jailbreak

It is not any secret that I prefer my iPhone to be jailbroken, but at the same time I have (aside from mentioning some apps) never pushed or really tried to convince someone to jailbreak. After all, if something were to happen I would not want to feel responsible. Now, this latest app to become available may encourage me to push jailbreaking just a little bit, because, it is something that many have been hoping to see for a long time now — turn-by-turn directions.

The app is called xGPS and provides iPhone users with turn-by-turn directions. xGPS uses Google Maps in conjunction with voice as well as it’s own real-time navigation. Additionally, it also allows the user to download maps ahead of time, just in case you worry about spotty coverage. It also means that those on a slower original iPhone will still be able to take advantage of this app.

Well, enough with this post, I just found the app in Cydia, now it is time for me to take a drive and do a little testing.

The download went fine, but it doesn’t seem to be working yet. It doesn’t find my location. Any ideas?

Hey Jon, I had to go into the settings and do a few things.

General: Can switch to activate Prevent Sleep Mode.
GPS: change “GPS to use” to iPhone 3G GPS
Once you change the GPS settings it should say connected and then find your location upon launch.

I realized the setting changes were needed after I wrote that. But I tried to pull up a mock directional path and it said it wasn’t able to pull it up. I didn’t get to spend too much time with it, so I’ll keep messing around with it. Any pointers please post.

so many questions. What happens when a call comes in? Is it only in metric? And why were you still telling your wife what lane to be in. A good GPS should do that for you. After all is said and done.. I think I’ll stick with my Garmin.

Lucky (or maybe just not popular) but I get little voice calls so I cannot answer that just yet. I will grab a second phone and see if I can figure it out though.

You can adjust the readout to Miles and MPH by a slider in the General settings section.

As for the video, good question about the lanes, but that was not taken by myself.
