Just in case none of the previous apps that enabled Japanese Emoji were what you were looking for, we have yet another option for you. This latest in what seems like a never ending quest to have emoji icons is called “Spell Number – Emoji for FREE” and just like the name implies, this app is indeed listed for free.
So, go ahead and download away. Just remember, after the app has been installed you will need to enable to icons.
- Launch the app and enter the number 9876543.21
- After you enter the above number, return to the home screen
- Then go to Setting -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards -> Japanese
- Then simply flip the switch for Emoji to the on position.

I’ve tried this and it works visually on my phone but my emails and texts received are not emoticons, just blocks or other weird not happy faces. Any suggestions as to why this is? Is there something else that DOES work on the receiver’s end? Thanks

there’s no reason to call anyone a “loser”. no one made an app that invented the emoji. it’s already on the phone, just not activated. it’s not like we’re ripping someone off by finding free ways to activate the emoji. get your facts straight.

To have $1 to spare-
get ur facts straight. All those people who charge .99 to get the emotions are actually the ppl ripping us off by charging a dollar for something all ready on the phone. The only thing that’s different between this and the .99 one is the one u pay for “unlocks” the emoji automatically vs. Spell number u enter a number to unlock. Idiot. U deserve to pay the dollar to the scammers

To enable Emoji for FREE, you could also do this: (works 100%)
1. Download Todew Lite
2. Create a task called "Emoji" (without quotes).
3. Follow on-screen instructions.

This may be old, but wanted to confirm this app still works on iphone os 4.0 beta 3. However, there is an emoji keyboard separately. Its no longer under Japanese.

Yes, the Emoji keyboard is not under Japanese, but there is nowhere to put the code.

I tried downloading Emoji to the iPad and it will not work. There isn't a place to put the number either. I was able to install it on my iTouch thought. Cool.
