The Apple Store went offline for a brief period this morning and it returned with a redesigned iPod Shuffle. Of course, the new design is not where they stopped. In addition to the new look, the new Shuffle has lost the now familiar control wheel and was also upped in storage size to 4GB.
Apple has seemingly taken a new approach with this model and due to the lack of control wheel on the Shuffle, the controls have been moved to the headphone cable. That can be both good and bad. The good news is that the controls should be easier to reach and use, but it does not look good for those who prefer not to use the standard Apple earbuds.
Otherwise, the new Shuffle also features a VoiceOver interface that tells you the artist name, song title and even the playlist name all with the push of a button. It is also able to sync with multiple playlists, which is something that has been lacking in the previous models.
As for availability, the new Shuffle is listed as shipping in 3-5 business days. It is priced at $79 and is available in either silver or black. Also, for those that still prefer the last model, those are still available in a variety of colors for $49.

Maybe Apple are looking to ship more ‘in ear’ headphones and this is a good way of making people upgrade to their own brand other than rivals. I’m always surprised that the in ear headphones are not pushed more (well in the UK anyway!)
Great blog – thanks for all the effort that you put in.
