AT&T preparing to begin “no-commit” iPhone 3G sales

From the looks of the leaked presentation slides that have turned up over at the Boy Genius Report it looks like AT&T is just about ready to begin selling the iPhone 3G without a contract.

According to the slides, the “no-commit” pricing will begin on March 26 and allow existing AT&T customers to purchase an iPhone 3G at the full retail price of $599 or $699 for the 8GB or 16GB model respectively.

There is of course a limitation that goes along with this purchase, the “no-commit” pricing is limited to one per customer. However, the presentation slides also note that “there is no indicator in the billing system identifying a customer purchased an iPhone 3G at the No-Commit price.” Which sounds to me like the limit should be no more than one device purchased in a single transaction.

Basically, this means you can now grab an iPhone 3G without having to make a two-year commitment, you will not even have to activate the phone at the time of purchase. You could buy the phone for yourself, as a gift, or even just to mail to some far away land.

Of course, while this is good news, we should point out that it would still be cheaper to buy the iPhone 3G for either $199 or $299 and activate the line and then just cancel and pay the early termination fee. That would mean a total payment of $374 for an 8GB model with ETF and $474 for the 16GB model.
