Just yesterday, we told you about GV Mobile, which is the upcoming Google Voice app for the iPhone that has recently been submitted for approval by Apple. Well, the developer has given a nice little update letting us know that it has indeed been submitted, but more importantly he has also teased us with a few screenshots.
So far, based on the images, GV Mobile looks like it will be a nice app, of course there are a few things that will determine its fate. These reasons are listed in no particular order — it needs to run well and be bug free, but it also needs to be priced correctly.
Honestly, I am not sure what priced correctly really means, but while I think this will add a lot more functionality to my use of Google Voice, I can see some people having an issue with paying for an app that is based on a free service. Either way, I am looking forward to the release.
In the meantime, check out the screenshots below…

Sean says that there are two versions of the app – one free (which will allow calls to be made via Google Voice) and one premium, which will have all of the features posted on the screen shots. The Premium version will be priced at $2.99

Hey Jason,
Thanks for the heads up on the premium pricing. I was aware of the free version, but was not able to find the premium pricing.
That said, $2.99 sounds more than fair!
March 25th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
2.99 is a bargain … I would pay that without blinking … heck, I would go up to 9.99 if it came to that. I miss GrandDialer so much this will be worth it.

I can’t wait for this! I wanted to get in on Grandcentral but missed out. How well will this work with existing Vonage setup?
March 26th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
Miss GrandDialer big time. I am looking forward to GV Mobile and believe at $2.99 is a deal. The additional functionality is just icing on the cake.

I am very happy to hear GV has submitted a mobile version. We are heavy users of the GrandDialer. Imagine how I felt after migrating over to GV… Disconnected!
April 3rd, 2009 at 7:59 pm
I didnt even migrate for that reason, too many people had problems after migrating. So I was happy to show off to my friends my grand dialer was still working……except today, grand dialer is now defunct
April 4th, 2009 at 1:15 am
I’m happy to see this is finally coming, after my grand dialer stopped working I’ve been waiting to see something like this be realsed one thing I am particuarly excite about is the SMS built in, no more 20$ a month for texting!

Google Voice is awesome. I am really looking forward to this app being made available. Any word on a timeline? I have been using http://www.google.com/voice/m for now but would really like to have the app.
April 6th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
One thing I haven’t seen mentioned about GV Mobile, will you be able to have your GV number show in caller ID as GrandDialer did? That was always an annoying aspect of GrandCentral, that if you called someone back, they’d start using your mobile number instead of going through the GC number. I use GC/GV as a virtual business number, so it is important to be able to separate those.

After reading this, a day feel like a million year for me. I CAN NOT wait for this GV app.
April 7th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
I can’t find a way to join Grand Central to be able to upgrade to Google Voice. Any suggestions on how I can get an invite to either Grand Central or Google Voice?
Thanks, Scott

Scottnw,
As far as I have seen, currently there is not any available way to sign up for either GrandCentral or Google Voice.

Tom,
It looks like good news. I just did a quick test. I made a call from GV Mobile on my cell to a toll free number that I have. I then checked the call details for that toll free number and it reflected my Google Voice number.

So I looked at this app for a while and then realized that a key feature is missing. When sending an SMS in voice.google.com, you have a button to click reply and you can see all earlier messages. Where is that in here? Do you have to just remember? No threading? How does that make sense? That is the only flaw I see in this app. Can’t wait for it to come out!
April 14th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Is there any news on when it will be available? I thought I heard something about early this week….maybe it is still too early.
July 14th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
I’m just trying to understand. I currently got invited from Google Voice. I got the app, but it then calls my iphone’s cell number then contacts to the number I want to dial. How does that help me with my cell minutes. I also have skype, and they bill be .02 a minute to use their app over wifi.
Other than using free text messaging, why would you get this app. Can you make direct phone calls over Google Voice to a normal land line, therefore bypassing AT&T?
July 15th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
@Michael
It doesn’t help on your minutes, all it does is fix the outbound caller ID problem people have. They want to make calls from their Google Voice number. Now if you are with a provider that will let you make a ‘friends’ list of numbers and get free calling to and from those numbers, then this can save you on minutes. Also since Google Voice makes a call to your cell phone, many providers are giving free inbound minutes with their plans.
July 20th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
If I call outbound using GV number, then is this going to negate my Free ATT mobile to mobile minutes?
July 21st, 2009 at 3:29 pm
apple will never approve this app! they would never let another app do free text messages like this! it directly competes with their voicemail system too!.
July 23rd, 2009 at 2:30 pm
I thought GV Mobile in the App Store is actually not from Google, but by some other people that make use of the open APIs… Now that Google Voice is open for business, Google is planning to release their own iPhone app.
July 23rd, 2009 at 3:06 pm
You are correct Vince, the GV Mobile app has already been approved a while back and still remains available. It is developed by Sean Kovacs. As far as I know, Google does have plans to also release an official app though.
July 26th, 2009 at 2:28 am
Google Voice is not mean’t to help you with your cell minutes. You get Google Voice “GV” for the “Enterprise” type Features. VoiceMail ListenIn, Recording, Phone Switching, Forwarding Voicemail and more. I received my Invite two early last week and have really liked the program. Just discovered the GV Mobile in the Apps store and immediately purchased the $2.99 version. This App makes life much easier with GV because going to the Internet to make a call on the Iphone was cumbersome at best.
The Developer of the GV Mobile App did a pretty good job. MOst people want to see Push Notification for SMS & VM. Overall the creation of this GV Mobile App has just changed the GAME. Really enjoying GV.

So, will it use network minutes to call or VOIP of some sort? (so you won’t use up network minutes/sms)
July 27th, 2009 at 11:29 am
Peter, if you dial out using GV Mobile you will be using your cell minutes, but on the plus side, the caller ID will reflect your Google Voice number and not your cell number.
In terms of minutes used, using GV Mobile or a direct dial is the same.
July 28th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
well, looks like i called it!. want to know how i knew this? bc apple doesnt give a rats ass about us. only their bottom line. their way of thinking is ‘we will make the user experience better for you provided it makes us as much money as possible!’ at least some alternative will be available for jailbroken phones!
August 5th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
Use iCall’s free VOIP app to make free 5 minute max. (or pay from iCall’s website for unlimited calls) over WiFi.
August 5th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Use free texting apps like Textfree Lite for 15 texts free per day.

Time has changed. Apple is forbidding iPhone users to install Google Voice app called “GV Mobile” on the device. They decided to take it off App Store. Why? Just because.
This smart phone is essentially a computer with operating system and an ability to install third party software like any other computer. When I called Apple, tech support representative informed me that Apple does not have to explain why they are forbidding me to install Google apps after I purchased device planning to use it with Google Voice. She also informed me that App Store is like any other store has right to choose what they put on their shelves.
Well, I respect their choice, but the last time I checked in my neighborhood mall none of their stores are FORBIDING me to use products from anywhere else but from their store. Does Apple respect my choice? Communist China government did not dare to make Lenovo give me a list of software I can install on my laptop. Lenovo respects my choice because they know what will happen with their laptops if they would try to deny this choice to people in free world.
Just imagine what would happen if Microsoft would make an agreement with Comcast and set up a list of software you are allowed to install. What if they allow you to connect to internet only through Comcast? What if Comcast decides they don’t like some software and a week later Microsoft would FORBID using it without any meaningful explanation? That would definitely be considered mafia-like behavior and nobody would tolerate it.
We are not tolerating this behavior neither from China, US government, Microsoft, nor from Comcast. For how long are we going to tolerate this behavior from Apple? I erased my iPhone, I smashed it with hammer and I will send it on Monday to Steve Jobs, c/o Apple 1 Infinite Loop Cupertino, CA 95014
Time has changed.

Just jail break your phone. And use GV Mobile that way
August 16th, 2009 at 11:47 pm
@dencimm, thank you for introducing me to icall. but there still is not an app that allows unlimited free calls while giving you your own phone number. correct me if im wrong If you want to text for free on your touch, or just want to save money on your iphone texting use gvmobile (jailbreak and get the full version free in cydia). I really love how you get your own number, however when you call, it will ring your phone first.
August 17th, 2009 at 9:38 am
Wow… This move of Apples is absolutely ridiculous. I hope people will have the balls to stop using iphones, this type of behavior can not be tolerated.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
Why let Skype have an app and refuse GV? Retarded
November 5th, 2009 at 9:34 am
Everyone needs to understand this is probably AT&T not Apple. Apple removed it because of AT&T’s limited bandwidth. I am surprised that Skype isn’t banned yet as well. I think AT&T wouldn’t be able to keep up if GV was released on the iPhone.
