Highlighting another of the already announced features that will be arriving with iPhone 3.0 is Spotlight Search. Personally, I would say this should have been something that was added a long time ago, but regardless, I am still willing to say that this is going to be one of the most useful of the new features. Of course, for those that jailbreak you may already be used to having it.
Anyway, Spotlight Search; What can it do and how do I use it?
Using the Spotlight Search will be simple, from your main (or first) Home screen, a flick of your finger to the right will move your home screen and reveal the search page.
Once on the search page, just begin typing and Spotlight will do the rest. The search will offer results from everything including your Contacts, Calendar, Notes, iPod, names of Apps and SMS/MMS messages.
The Spotlight Search also searches the To, From and Subjects of your emails, but it does not search the message themselves.
The results will show in list form with a nice icon to the left side. Overall it seems to be quick and easy.

Im a little confused…I just downloaded 3.0 for my 3g and I cannot tell a difference…I waited 30 minutes or so for itunes to update my iphone and NOTHING is different…At least not that I can tell. My main question is how do I access spotlight? Ive feel like I have tried everything. I have read that you can access spotlight by swiping your finger on the home screen but all that happens is my screen moves away and comes right back.. : / Please help me understand

simply push the home screen to the right – as if you would jump between screens

While I have long wanted cut & paste, I think that spotlight is my favorite of the new features introduced in 3.0. From now on I will only open the Contacts program to add contacts. Makes calling so much faster. Plus it searches through the all the content in Notes!

Spotlight is a great addition but I’m a little concerned that it finds old emails that have been deleated. Why? How? Can we permantly deleat email?

I’m having the same problem. Why are old emails that have been deleted showing up in spotlight?

I can’t believe that spotlight does NOT search the text within email (only from, to, and subject). That is a BIG miss!
