Despite the endless negotiations, the deal between China Unicom and Apple has not been made official, but that has not stopped the Chinese carrier from recently adding the iPhone 3G to their website.
As of now, the iPhone 3g listing is just on the Shanghai branch website and is not available for sale. At this time it simply gives some information regarding the specs of the phone which include some goodies such as mobile Internet and mobile television. They also show the iPhone 3G as being capable of making a payment through near-field communication.
Basically, while it is interesting to see the iPhone 3G get added, it truly does not mean it will be available anytime soon. In fact, a company spokeswoman stated that she did not know why the information was there and that the “regional branches are fairly independent.”
What it seems like is that they are simply trying to showcase the functionality that a customer could have with the 3G network, which is currently still in the process of being rolled out. In addition to the iPhone 3G, China Unicom has also added similar information regarding the Android based HTC G1.
