Browsing around the Internet I came across a review of an iPhone app called Caught You. In short the app is designed to possibly help recover a stolen iPhone. The Caught You app actually pretends to be another app called Bank Details.
Users can download the Caught You app from the App Store, and once installed they are presented with a configuration screen the first time they run it. The configuration seems to be as simple as entering a valid and full email address. After that initial run, the app shows up with an icon listed as Bank Details and launches to a screen that asks for your passcode.
The theory is that the thief will then some some quality time trying various passcodes. Of course during that time the app is actually taking advantage of the iPhones built in GPS and 3G or EDGE connectivity and pinpointing the location of the phone. During that time it is also sending you an email with the latitude and longitude of your iPhone, it even includes a link to view that location in Google Maps.
According to the review;
“Caught You! really does work, in so much as it accurately determines your location and consistently fires off emails to your chosen address.”
Of course, it also goes on to address what was my first thought.
“However, it’s unclear just how useful this app would really be.”
I suppose it would be better than nothing, the app is selling for only $2.99, which all things considered sounds a lot better than buying a new iPhone. So, I am thinking this app and its ability to work would be determined by how greedy the thief is.

This is one of the most awesome apps I’ve heard of. Agreed that it may not be useful. But if it comes to that point, that app could save the day!

I agree that this is a good idea. But there’s already a ton of apps exactly like this in the app store, and they’re all 99 cents. You even reviewed one called “Private-I” back in September.

I searched for it and was unable to find it.
