xGPS version 1.2 has been released and with that comes the long awaited turn-by-turn directions for the iPhone. According to the xGPS website, the audible directions are being handled by a text-to-speech engine that converts text instructions to sound, which means that as of now you cannot change the voice. That said, it was mentioned that they are currently “working on a cleaner English voice which should be included in the subsequent releases.”
In addition to the audible directions, xGPS also features items such as Night Mode, the ability to prevent your iPhone from going to sleep as well as a “Routes Manager” that allows you to save your routes for offline use.
The one limitation (that is mentioned) is the lack of ability to find directions for routes with more than one starting or more than one end point. Kind of a bummer, but easy enough to work around.
xGPS version 1.2 is available as a free download and can be found in Cydia. Users that currently have xGPS will be prompted to install the update upon launching Cydia.
Disclaimer: I have downloaded the update but have not had any time to test the audible directions yet although it did seem to be able to find a route without any trouble. I did notice that I needed to switch the “GPS Enabled” slider in the settings to the “On” position after installing the app before I could get started.

You don’t need a tutorial, just a little playing around in xGPS.
When you first launch the app, tap the magnifying glass icon and then tap on “Driving Directions”. That’s it.

U need to turn on “iphone 3g gps” under setting. i think by default it was using “xgps”. However, I can get the voice to work. I think there are problems and bugs here.

I’ve activated the 3G GPS, and the program accurately determines my location, however the only way I can get directions is by manually entering an address.
This isn;t too much of a hassle, however the program does feature a convenient search tool. When I search for a location, say Petco, I get a list of matching addresses. Clicking on an address I want inserts a Blue pin on the map. But from here, I can;t get the pin to do anything. I’ve tried clicking it, swiping it, zooming in on it, but all it really does is mark the location of my search, it doesn;t transfer this information into the search field for driving directions.
Has anyone had similar experiences? am I completely missing something?
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

What I noticed today is you phone has to be on and if it goes into lock mode, the GPS will stop giving you the voice directions.. so you hav eto keep it on the here the “robotic” voice ..which is pretty funny btw

Do you have to have an adapter to hear the voice?
