Next generation iPhone to support HD video?

PhoneNews, a mobile phone news-site, believes that Apple may be somehow integrating HD video playback into the next generation iPhone and possibly the iPod Touch.

“The next generation of iPhone and iPod touch will make broad and sweeping changes to HD display capacity on the devices. First, Apple will likely offer at least one version of the iPhone and one version of iPod touch with an even higher resolution screen, targeting both Microsoft’s Zune HD, as well as HTC’s Touch HD and Touch Pro2.”

Bundling HD technology with the new iPhone is something that will undoubtedly attract a whole new demographic of consumers. Not only would this technology allow for HD videos/movies to be played on the device itself, but it would also allow the HD media to be streamed (via an HD cable) to a larger display. Were HD support actually implemented, the iPhone could act as an impromptu Apple TV.

“Currently the iPhone and iPod touch do not exceed 480i and 480p (respectively) in terms of video resolution. However, the next iPhone and iPod touch will enable full HD playback, with 720p and 1080i output modes.”

Keep in mind that HD support for the next generation iPhone has yet to be confirmed by any official source, for, well, a device that itself hasn’t been confirmed.
