T-Mobile Germany bans Skype on the iPhone

With plenty of people beginning to enjoy Skype on the iPhone, there is yet another country (in addition to Canada) that will not be able to use the app. T-Mobile Germany has moved to ban the use of the Skype application on the iPhone citing that;

“It is clearly stated in our customer contracts that such services may not be used,”

According to T-Mobile, the reason behind the ban is “because the high level of traffic would hinder our network performance, and because if the Skype programme didn’t work properly, customers would make us responsible for it.”

It is interesting to note that while they plan to ban the app, it was once available in the App Store, which means there are sure to be some using it. T-Mobile has also threatened to cancel the contracts of those who continue to use the app.

Although they may not be able to do anything, it appears that Skype is not just accepting the news of the banning. They have responded by stating that they (T-Mobile) are pretending “that their action has to do with technical concerns: this is baseless. Skype works perfectly well on iPhone, as hundreds of thousands of people globally can already readily attest.”

And to think the we here in the US were upset that we cannot use Skype over 3G and are limited to Wi-Fi connections, after seeing this news, that does not seem quite as bad anymore.
