Apple rejects Transmission BitTorrent app for the iPhone

While the App Store is great, I can no longer accept the statement that there is any app for everything like the commercials suggest. Of course, anyone who reads this site on a regular basis is most likely aware of the issues with the App Store and the fact that Apple holds the ultimate control over what apps will actually see the inside of the store.

Anyway, getting back on track here — the latest app to see a rejection from Apple is Drivetrain. For those who may be unfamiliar with this app, it is a BitTorrent client for the iPhone that would have allowed users to remotely control the Mac program called Transmission.

According to an email that Maza Digital received from Apple, the app was denied because;

“This category of applications is often used for the purpose of infringing third party rights. We have chosen to not publish this type of application to the App Store.”

Now for a little rant — while many people use BitTorrent clients to download illegal copies of music, movies and applications there are also plenty of people who use it for legal purposes. I use BitTorrent, albeit not all that often, however I recently used it to download Ubuntu 9.04.

Of course, possibly the funniest part of this denial is that the Drivetrain app did not even actually upload or download anything — legal or illegal. All it really did was control the app on the users Mac. That means this denial is not in any way going to stop piracy.

Simply put, I would say that this denial is doing nothing more than hurting legitimate users such as myself. (begin sarcasm)For that, thanks a lot Apple.(end sarcasm)
