Following up on rumors that AT&T was considering offering cheaper data plans for the iPhone, we now have some confirmation. According to AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega;
“Right now we continue to study what is the best thing that is available, not just from an iPhone point of view, but what you can do to stimulate additional demand,”
He also went on to state that;
“Our business is to sell services,” he said, adding that AT&T doesn’t make money from the sale of devices like the iPhone, which it subsidizes heavily.
Basically, it would appear that AT&T is considering offering some less expensive data plans, but that does not mean current users are going to see a price cut and still be able to keep the same level of service. In other words, AT&T is not considering lowering the price of the current unlimited data plan on the iPhone, but instead they are considering the option of offering limited plans.
As of now, nothing has been made official, however it sounds like we can expect to see some new plans offered in the not-to-distant future. Personally I would rather pay a few dollars more and not have to worry about overages, of course I am sure there are plenty of people who rarely use any data and would rather save a few bucks each month.
