We have what would appear to be yet another questionable bad decision in regards to an app being denied entry into the App Store. This time that app is an ebook reader called Eucalyptus and it was denied because of potential access to the Kama Sutra.
Thank you for submitting Eucalyptus — classic books, to go. to the App Store. We’ve reviewed Eucalyptus — classic books, to go. and determined that we cannot post this version of your iPhone application to the App Store because it contains inappropriate sexual content and is in violation of Section 3.3.12 from the iPhone SDK Agreement which states:
“Applications must not contain any obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, etc.), or other content or materials that in Apple’s reasonable judgement may be found objectionable by iPhone or iPod touch users.”
You see, the Eucalyptus app is an ebook reader that allows users to download books, over 28,000 of them from Project Gutenberg. I used the term ‘potential access’ on purpose because the app does not actually contain the Kama Sutra by default, the user would have to actually go and download it.
I cannot help but hope that this is just a mistake and something that will see a resolution soon. However at the same time, Apple really needs to figure something out because this objectionable material stuff is getting old.
It is also funny to think that this was the reason for denial — in regards to the Kama Sutra. So I headed over to Amazon.com and did a quick search for “Kama Sutra Kindle” and was greeted with multiple options. Funny how this did not cause the Kindle app to get denied.
As of now, the developer has resubmitted another version of the app that blocks the access to the Kama Sutra.

You’d pay $0.99 for something you’d get free on Stanza?
