Yet another reason why I am glad to have a jailbroken iPhone. Yup, this one is limited to those who are jailbroken, or willing to jailbreak. Anyway, it is possible, even easy to make VoIP calls on the iPhone using a cellular connection, which in my case is AT&T’s 3G network.
Basically, you can be up and making calls in just about a minute or so. All you have to do, (assuming you are already jailbroken) is:
- Launch Cydia
- Search for and install an app called “voipover3G”
- Begin making calls
In addition to Skype, this app was also noted as being able to work with Fring and Truphone. I have tested and verified that this works with Skype (see the images and video below), but have not used either Fring or Truphone.
Also, after reading the “More Info” section in Cydia, it would appear that voipover3g can actually allow other programs to essentially do the same thing, however it involves a little more work than a simple install. Nonetheless, the voipover3g app is a huge plus for avid Skype, Fring or Truphone users.
