iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 reported to remove MMS, tethering capability for AT&T users

Some early reports from iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 users have not been all that good of news for AT&T users. So far we have heard that the option for MMS as well as the ability to tether has been removed. The removal of tethering comes with less surprise, after all I had not expected AT&T to allow that. However, the MMS comes as a little more of a shock. I was not able to find any details on whether AT&T officially authorized MMS or if that was simply a feature that was supported by iPhone 3.0, of course, I had just assumed that as an AT&T customer it would be available.

In the meantime, these details are coming courtesy of developers, in other words nothing has been stated officially from Apple. Lets just hope this is going to be something limited to beta 5 and they will become available again in the future. I would suggest that, for now, if you are a developer that needs MMS, then you may want to hold off on updating your software.

Did iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 come out yet?

Even though MMS was included in earlier betas, as far as I know, AT&T did not allow MMS messages to be sent from iphones. I tried to send a few MMS and each one failed. A friend said he was able to receive an occassional MMS on his pre-beta5 iphone but it was very inconsistent.

Has MMS worked for anyone else on AT&T?

And removed for UK O2 users also…

this is surely just an temporary limitation or technicality. in the iphone os 3.0 presentation, it was clearly stated that MMS would be available. and there’s only *one* official carrier for the iphone. surely apple wouldn’t announce a feature that would only work on jailbroken iphones.

chances are, AT&T’s going to require another type of fee or service plan that includes MMS. so maybe that’s why it’s stopped working, for now.

    let’s hope.

I talked to an ATT rep who said that MMS should work fine as long as you have the iphone data plan and some txt msg plan.

AT&T DOES NOT support MMS via iPhone yet because 3.0 is currently in beta and has not been released…once it’s released…it will be supported…but…the word is that AT&T will be reworking their iPhone data plans to be similar to their regular phone messaging plans…you pay so much for SMS and a little more for MMS…so you could possibly see a price increase to get MMS capability. It was removed in Beta 5 because there was a work around to get it to work and AT&T didn’t like that.

Also, in response to “mark” up there, there’s only one official -US- iPhone carrier. There’s no network lock-in if you go outside the US, so ATnT could very well decide that it doesn’t want to support MMS. The phone can support it, but the network doesn’t necessarily have to.

So i read an article today that says 3.0 has the MMS capability but that AT&T will not be supporting this until later this summer. and I’m SURE they will squeeze more money out of their customers for MMS.
