Releasing a free iPhone app can be profitable

According to a recent AdWhirl report it would seem that some of the free iPhone apps are making quite a bit of money. Based on their study, a top 100 app is going to take in somewhere between $400 and $5,000 per day. They have based their numbers on the fact that they have signed on to advertise with “over 10%” of the top 50 apps in the App Store and are currently serving 250 million impressions per month.

All-in-all, even on the low-end at $400 you are still making quite a bit of money. That comes out to about $12,000 a month.

Of course, it is important to point out that majority of the (non-top 100) available free apps are taking in quite a bit less than the suggested $400 per day, because it is not easy to get your app featured and in the top 100.

While the ad supported apps appear like they can do well, I have to question why they are making so much. Take the Wall Street Journal app (pictured here) and their ad placement. I have been using this app regularly since its release and have never purposely clicked on an ad. I have however clicked on an ad almost every time I use — but always by accident.

Some of the free games with ads requires you to press the ads, in effort to save your game.
