SlingPlayer Mobile in all its crippled glory now available in the App Store

And the wait is over, SlingPlayer Mobile has recently been added to the App Store and is currently available for download. Of course, as we expected, it is not the release we were hoping for.

To begin with, AT&T has stepped in and required the app to stream using only a Wi-Fi connection, which means no 3G streaming. That alone is sad, but there is more. The SlingPlayer Mobile app for the iPhone only supports use with a Slingbox SOLO, PRO or PRO-HD.

That said, the app description in the App Store does mention that the app “may stream” with the Slingbox Classic, AV and Tuner depending on your configuration. In other words you may have luck with your older, or in my case current Slingbox but I am not going to count on receiving any support from Sling.

Anyway, the app that many people have been waiting for (myself included) is now available — just be willing to shell out the $29.99.

Now that we can download the app I will pose the question. Will you? Personally, I am not sure, but it is not the $29.99 price tag that is giving me second thoughts. I am actually willing to spend that, but the lack of 3G is not that appealing.
