Beginning next Friday, Best Buy retail outlets across the country will begin to sell the iPhone 3G S starting at 10 a.m.
Unlike Apple and AT&T, the two other major distributors of the iPhone 3G S, Best Buy plans to offer its Black Tie Protection plan. This plan would protect the iPhone 3G S from “accidental damage during handling, power surges and everyday wear.”
While Apple does offer its standard AppleCare warranty with the iPhone 3G S, it comes nowhere close to the amount of coverage offered by Best Buy’s Black Tie Protection plan.
According to AppleInsider ,
“Opting for Black Tie will reportedly still be expensive. For other cellphones, the program costs between $7 and $10 per month depending on the model, but the iPhone’s rate rises to $15 per month. That leaves iPhone owners paying about $180 per year — almost as much as the 16GB iPhone 3G S — even though those with other expensive phones can pay $120 per year for the same coverage.”
It would appear as if Best Buy’s Black Tie Protection plan does everything AppleCare does, and more (at a price.) The Black Tie Protection plan covers things such as accidental spills, cracked screens, power surges, etc. It also seems as if, in many cases, Best Buy will opt to replace the entire device instead of attempting to repair a specific issue.
