How to enable autofill for Safari on iPhone OS 3.0

How to enable autofill for Safari on iPhone OS 3.0

I love the comments we have been receiving lately, not only have they been fun to read, but also engaging. We have had a fair amount of comments simply sharing user experiences, as well as some readers offering helpful advice and some readers looking for a little help. That said, keep the comments coming and in the mean time here is a quick how to for a recent comment.

The question was asked about how to turn on the autofill functionality in Safari on the iPhone.

“Does anyone know how to use the autofill feature for usernames and passwords on websites?”

In order to enable that feature, first go to your iPhones Settings.

Settings -> Safari -> AutoFill, then switch the sliders for “Use Contact Info” and/or “Names & Passcodes” to the on position based on which you want to autofill. Personally I have opted to switch both to the on position.

I kind of expected that autofill would have been turned on by default, but I think I can understand why it would have been left in the off position, as I mentioned in a previous post, I can understand that some may see it as a security issue. Thankfully though, it is simple enough to turn on.

This does not work. The first think I did was track down the switch and turn it on, but to my dismay autofill does not work.

There are so many sites that require user names and passwords and the most offensive ones are where they won’t accept your usual because-this-site-just-requires-a-login-for-the-sake-of-ticking-me-off name and/or password because some teen-age power-tripping author set some obsessive rules.

Autofill is always greyed out even though I turned it on. These sites do not have any special code preventing login saving, because it works on Firefox and IE. I also tested it on some of my own sites.

Also cant get autofill working – exactly the same behaviour my end.

Anyone know if this has been confirmed as a 3.0 bug??

Re: hey guys, I’ve figured it out! it’s not a 3.0 bug. Basically, you can’t fill in info if you have no info. I had the same problem, so, I went to my CONTACTS > ADDED MY Email Address > Fill in as much Data as possible including notes etc. Then go to a web form page, select the field box and then hit the AutoFill tab. Presto!!

    Hope this info helps.

Still, even after turning autofill settings on, iPhone 3.0 is not auto fill-ing my usernames and passwords. Anyone else encountered this?

When I go to Settings–>Safari, autofill does not appear! Someone please help?

I have been digging around on this topic and am finding plenty of complaints due to autofill not working but not any resolutions. I have not seen any issues personally, so it is hard for me to offer any advice here. On just about every password related site I am getting the little slide-up asking me to save me password, ect.

make sure you set up a contact with your first and last name then fill in all info address number email etc.then go to auto fill under safari-and where it asks contact to use or whatever button pick your name then go to any form onine and hit the auto fuill button it totally works!!

  10. Wrong Says:

No dude that’s entirely different. We’re not trying to fill in contact info. Safari won’t prompt to save usernames and passwords.

  11. Hunter Says:

I have seen the same. I can get it to autofill my own info (in “from” field) to send a mail through Safari, but not my “friend’s” info for the “to” field. You CAN copy an address in contacts, but that’s a laborious work-around.

    Sheesh!

i live on using roboform.com = wait a couple months more, they are making a iphone version !

  13. Anon Says:

GO to settings>Safar>Autofill> Leave auto fill on but the “use my contacts” off, that way the first time u go to a site you’ll have to input ur usrname and pw, but then it should prompt you if you want it to save.

  14. Hawkcreek Says:

Autofill just doesn’t work. 9 websites out of 10 the option to autofill isn’t available. With autofill turned “on” in safari I still don’t get the option of saving username or password. Better to not offer a feature than offer a feature that doesn’t work.

  15. Marshall Says:

I did as recommended but in some cases even where autofill button is enabled, such as LinkedIn.com, it simply does not work. It worked here, not there…

  16. Roger Says:

I think it only works on iPhone optimized sites. Try it on mobile.orbitz.com, or http://www.wf.com if you bank at wells Fargo. My question is if you accidentaly hit “never for this site”, where do you reset that? Can I clear all of the passwords somewhere and start over? Help!!

  17. ged Says:

It worked for me…just like anon in a previous post…with the 3GS…go to settings…safari…slide names and password on…the first toime on the site you’ll have to fill in the info…when you click login you’ll get a pop up asking you if you’d like to save th epassowd…hit yes and the next time you log in it will autofill.

  18. snysh Says:

i dont even see the autofil option in my phone!! why is that??

  19. farhad Says:

It does not work, period, 3GS. End of story. Apple: Must Try Harder.

A lot harder, as your business partner in the UK, and the ONLY service provider to sell iPhone, which is also HEAVILY marketing its Broadband, actually ius marketing two incompatible things. iPhone’s incoming and outgoing servers, and O2 broadbands, will NOT WORK IN THE SAME ROOM AT THE SAME TIME.

And guess what, only 1 in 4 of O2’s support staff know this (ie it took me 4 calls before someone told me this, and on the 5th call the person also did not know).

This is a strategic slip up of monumental, share-price damaging, CEO-should-be-fired for incompetance proporations.

    Just thought I’d share.

Apologies for the typos in my previous comment ….

    Nice application. Works great.

  23. brandy Says:

Is there a way to find out the names and passwords your phone has stored?

So if I forgot a password to a site I frequent on my phone and need to get to on a desktop, can I look through my info and find the password?

  24. iphoner Says:

OK Autofill set up takes a few steps:

    1. Go to Settings > Safari > Autofill > My Info >

    2. Select your contact information from the Contacts list. Your contact info needs to have all your details – eg email etc.

    3. Back on Autofill make sure Use My Contact Info is set to ON, Names & Passwords is set to ON.

    4. When you visit a site where you need to enter your email address etc. the FIRST time you visit it you will need to enter your details, then a pop-up will appear asking you if you want Safari to save the details.

    You’re good to go.

  25. Puas Says:

Having same issue with the passwords… but as roger’s post above, seems to be a setting on the website itself. I got it to work, after making sure autofill setting was on and my contact info was on, on hotmail.com, but wouldn’t work on a site for my homework assignments, webassign.com!

I have been able to enable autofil but I have multiple contact fields, e.g. work email, personal email, work phone, personal phone, etc… Apple should allow you to chose which fields will be used in the autofill setting, it's pulling the some business contact and some home contact information

  28. dott. dulcamara Says:

the strange thing is autofill worked fine until some weeks ago…
I remember (but I can't swear) I've been this problem after an os upgrade

  29. Anonymous Says:

For those who DON'T HAVE the auto fill option in settings->safari.
DEinstall/Remove the "ImaSafari" plugin from Cydia and autofill returns. Took me a year to figure it out ;)

  30. Jill Johnssen Says:

My autofill worked fine until I updated to 4, now nothing. Please help. The instructions need to be pretty simple, I'm not super computer literate. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I LOVE my iphone!
