Granted, there are not many apps in the App Store that are supporting Push Notifications at this point, and for some that may be leading to a little question as to how to enable the notifications.
Well, to begin with, the “Notifications” listing in your iPhone’s settings will not appear as an option until you launch an app that has that support. In my case, you can see (in the below image) that app is Tap Tap Revenge 2.6.
Anyway, simply launch an app that has support for Notifications then go back to your iPhone’s settings and then you will notice a new listing called “Notifications” that will be listed as “On.”
Once there, you can then go in and customize the settings on an app by app basis.

Does that mean push notifications are off if there is no app installed that uses them — one would presume, butcha never know, eh?
Looking for things to do to improve the poor 3.0 / 3G s battery life.

Good question David, I have not found any other way to turn them off, so yes, I would assume that if you have no apps using (or that can use) Push then it could be considered off.
Otherwise, once you have one installed, you can them turn them off if you wanted. (as seen in the pic above).

are push notification available on the 3G OS 3.0 or only on the 3GS. My 3G (running OS 3.0) does not have a ‘notifications’ option in the setting.

David: If you install any application that uses push notifications and after using some time you remove that application. till the device token is registerd on the provider server or server remove your device token self. you'll get notification alerts. and even if you didn't install any application that uses push notification you get this setting on/off.
