It seems that there may be a pretty simple way to get an iPhone 3G S sans contract by way of Apple’s online store. I am not sure I would say this is a hack, or just a neat work around, but either way I have not tested it personally.
That said, this little trick also does not allow you to get any special or lower pricing. In other words you will still be paying the full rate for an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S.
Anyway, according to iTalkPhone you will need to use Firefox along with the Firebug plugin in order to do this. Assuming you have that taken care of, just follow the instructions listed below.
1. Go to any non-apple product in the store.apple.com (e.x: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TV943VC/A?fnode=MTY1NDA4Mg&mco=NjM0MTMwMw)
2. Click on the little FireBug icon on the bottom of the screen, now Firebug pops up and Click “Inspect”, and choose the “Add to cart Icon”
3. In firebug, right above where it’s highlighted, you should see “”. Click on “TV943VC/A” and change it to the value of the iPhone you want:

4. Now click on the Add to Cart button, and the iPhone should be in your cart. Proceed to buy it if you want.
Of course, I am pretty sure that if you are willing to pay full price to not have a contract then you can also make the purchase in-person at Apple or AT&T. However if you are set on not having to go out in order to make a purchase, then this may be the best way.

You CAN buy it without the contract, but it costs $600 / $700. I want one myself, but I refuse to pay that much for it. And since I just opened an account just last December, I have no choice but to wait until next summer for an upgrade. -_-;

I just called up my local apple store and asked if i could walk in and buy an iphone 3gs without a contract.
She said yes, as long as you hold an at&t account. So you can buy one and not sign up for an account, but you have to have an at&t account to purchase it.

You can go to buy.com and find never locked iPhones, but they’re very expensive. A 32GB 3GS is $1150. But it’s no questions asked, no AT&T account needed. On the other hand, I’ve tried Verizon and Sprint and AT&T customer service alone is worth switching. Nobody else is close in quality of their customer service reps.

Why don’t you guys get a go phone from at&t and then go to apple store and then buy the iphone with no contract. The service reps probably will ask if you have a contract with att and tell them yes. go phone is almost like a contract but you only use it monthly. Within a month, go to the apple store and buy the iphone with no contract and tell them that you have an account with AT&T. After a month, break the AT&T go phone contract and there you go.

That’s because it’s not a no-contract iPhone. It’s a no-commitment iPhone, which just means that you can cancel the contract at any time you like without early termination fees, but you still have to SIGN the contract (or have one already) with AT&T…

Ok. I just stumbled on to the site, and after reading all the posting. I thought that I should share my two-cents worth of experience. Without getting into the debate regarding why iphone without a contract, that is still locked, I can tell you, that I was able to step straight into an apple store and get myself the 3GS 16G with no questions asked about the ATT contract. The sales person was, oh we dont sell it. And I showed her the fine print on the apple iphone page (in grey) where it states that I can buy the phone as a gift for whatever the money is listed. In fact, she was confused about the price, she was trying to charge me $100 more. But when I showed it to her, she gave me the phone. I walked out. Took 15 min to fix it, and now I can use it anywhere I want. Also installed VOIP, and I can tell you “I am loving it”…This event is last week of Aug 09

well, i have an iphone that i recently dropped and cracked the screen and even with a contract they still told me it would be $299 to buy the phone because technically im "upgrading". i dont want to upgrade, i want the same damn phone that i already have.
also, my boyfriend tried purchasing the phone for me but was declined because he didnt have my account information. and the only reason why they charge so much for the phone without a contract is really only to convince the person to actually sign a contract anyways. unless theyre willing to pay anywhere from $399-699, which is RIDICULOUS. if they sell you the phone through at an att store its obviously still locked to ATT, unless you "jailbreak" it. its fucking retarded and i dont understand why im still being charged an outrageous price to buy the same phone that i already have. they told me to take it to apple and just get it repaired because its alot cheaper than just out-right buying the phone. fuck them both

so I did the math and basically if you buy an iPhone 3gs at 699$ and jailbreak it and hook it up with tmobile for 2 years you would end up paying a few hundred dollars LESS than if you were to get the phone for 299 w/ a contract from att at 90$ a month for unlimted everything (unlimited everything is $60 on tmobile )
