Scott Forstall, Apple’s senior vice president, just officially announced iPhone 3.0 at WWDC 09.
According to MacRumors’ live feed, iPhones running the 3.0 software will be able to:
- Cut/copy/paste/undo across all apps (at last!)
- Use landscape mode in Mail/Notes/Messages
- MMS will be supported (photos/contacts/audio files/locations can now be sent via MMS)
- Search function in Mail
- Spotlight feature (you can now search your entire iPhone from the home screen, much like Mac OS X)
- Push Notifications
As if that wasn’t enough, you can now rent and purchase movies directly from your iPhone, as well as TV shows, music, and audiobooks.
Forstall also unveiled “Find My Phone,” an application that allows MobileMe users who have lost their iPhones to locate them via Google Maps. In addition to locating them, “Find My Phone” also allows users to remotely wipe the iPhone, erasing all data (this can be restored from a backup.)
“iPhone OS 3.0 will be available for free to all iPhone users (3G and original.) $9.99 for iTouch users. Available worldwide on June 17th.”
More to come regarding WWDC 09 shortly!

Pretty cool but the iPhone 3GS gets video record, video edit, built-in compass, and voice control. Why couldn’t they add voice control to the 3G? Voice control and video should have been in there since day 1. Even a crummy video record/stream would be better than nothing.

Yeah. I totally agree with you there, Rob. If Apple want us to be good boys and girls and not Jailbreak our phones the best strategy they could use is to not treat us as if we were born yesterday and blatantly rip us off. There have been several Video recording apps which were submitted to the iTunes store but were turned down as ‘unsuitable’. One you missed is inbuilt Geotagging on the 3GS camera which, I believe, won’t be coming to other iPhones but has been possible since the iPhone 3g (and even the 2g if you can put up with the lower degree of accuracy). At least they’ve allowed others to make geotagging apps though….

(PS – I have never Jailbroken my iPhone – I believe in following the law, even if it does include following stupid terms and conditions by micromanaging control-freak companies and I also believe that two wrongs don’t make a right.)
