In some good news on the jailbreaking and unlocking news front, the iPhone Dev Team have recently announced that an unlock would be available as of Friday and that a jailbreak would also be available shortly.
In terms of an iPhone OS 3.0 unlock, as it was stated by the Dev Team, “ultrasn0w is the new yellowsn0w,” which means that if you are planning to unlock your device or need to have it remain unlocked you will be using ultrasn0w. According to a recent post on the Dev-Team blog, ultrasn0w will be available on Friday. Unfortunately, this unlock method, although it will be available in time for the iPhone 3G S release is not guaranteed to work on that model.
Additionally, for those that want to jailbreak, but not unlock their OS 3.0 running iPhone, that will also take a little time before it will be available. Of course, from the way it was written on the Dev-Team’s blog it sounds like it may be ready a little sooner than the unlock.
A release date was not noted in this instance, instead QuickPwn and Pwnage Tool are noted as becoming available “no sooner than the Apple release.” In other words it sounds like it may even be the same day, which is personally what I am hoping to see.

Even after all this time, I’m still not sure what “jailbroken” or “unlocked” even means. Maybe a smart use of this space would be for a quick tutorial on the definitions and benefits/drawbacks of jailbreaking or unlocking an iPhone?

Jailbreaking means to enable the phone to be used with other cellular providers other than the one it was originally intended for. Such as the iPhone and AT&T. I have a jailbroken iPhone using a T-Mobile SIM card. To Unlock the phone means that you can install other apps to it using additional installers other than the Apple AppInstaller.
I think that pretty much sums it up

Person, I believe you have these mixed up. Jailbreaking allows for 3rd party app installation (Cydia) while unlocking the device allows for use with other carriers.

@ person
You did get these crossed up or bass ackwords as the term goes all in all very nice attempt though.

they sure did

LMAO! @Person, its the other way arround! Jailbreak is to put app’s that Apple does not allow!
Unlock is to use ANY and EVERY SIM freely (for the US use use another SIM thats not AT&T , for me (in the Netherlands) use any SIM other than T-Mobile NL!! )
Thanks God for the Dev-Team! All hail them!
And I hope no one goes trying to Sell it and get Rich off of it!
GodBless.

So. I’m an American who moved to Sweden and I unlocked my phone in the US and now use a swedish carrier for my phone. I in my excitement to have the Iphone 3.0 downloaded it to my phone and now since I don’t have my original U.S. SIM card it says that my swedish one is not valid and I can’t even get to my home screen (saying only SIM card does not seem to be supported). Is there any hope for me to crack it without having a sim card or with having my international sim. Please tell me there is some hope to make use of this phone.

Cashin,
You need to wait for Dev team to release the software to jailbreaking and unlock the version 3.0
In short, what you need is:
1. Jailbreaking your iphone
2. After Jailbreaking the iphone, you will be able to run another application to “unlock” your phone making it to work with all carriers around the world.
Some of us confuse about the terminology:
Jailbreaking: make the phone able to accept 3rd party application.
Unlock: make the phone work with other carrier beside AT&T.
In other to unlock, one must jailbreaking the phone first, so that you can install Yellowsnow, an application, to make the phone work with all carriers.
Hope this help you.

Will the new 3.0 OS unlock work with my new iPhone 3g S? Ive got one on contract but would like to jailbreak it if possible?

1. Does ultrasn0w allow jailbroken iPhones to get the 3.0 firmware WITHOUT deleting all of the jailbroken apps
OR
2. Does ultrasn0w allow iPhone users with the firmware 3.0 to jailbreak their iPhone?
If the answer is #1, then what is the URL for UltraSn0w on Cydia?

I have just bought an iphone 3gs 16g on Orange from e-bay….it has been jailbroken but not sim-unlocked and I need it on o2 cos I am still on contract with o2 from the last iphone I had (I had it stolen)
anyway I bought the phone on Orange as I was led to believe it was easy to get an iphone unlocked (would only cost £20) but I now have the phone and they say at my local shop that does un-locking that it's software is 4.1 (whatever that means) so therefore cannot be un-locked…does anyone know any different?
