Highlighting another item that was revealed during the WWDC 2009 Keynote, iPhone users will be getting Voice Control. I am thinking this will be one of those features that people either really love or could just care less about. Personally, I am falling into the really love category.
Up to this point I have been using the Dialer app from Melodis for my dialing needs, and while it works wonderful I have been wanting a little more overall control. Enter Voice Control which will allow you to make calls with your voice. Users will be able to search (and make a call) from your contact list by name as well as saying the number. Voice Control will also repeat your commands so you have confirmation that you are calling the correct person.
So far Voice Control sounds good, but getting to that more control. The Voice Control functionality will also allow you to control your music. You will be able to do things such as ask what song is playing as well play a specific song or specific album. You can even raise or lower the volume, pick a playlist or shuffle all of your music.

Will this work with the original iphone?

My understanding was that this was only for the 3GS iPhone and not the current gen of iPhones, I could be wrong, and hopefully I am because I want voice control

Currently voice control is only available for iPhone 3G S.

Thats what i thought, but the wording in the above article makes it sound like it’s coming to the current gen Iphone, which is not correct….yet

I’m VERY disappointed that this is a 3GS-only feature. It’s a HUGE insult to the tens of millions of 3G owners given that the majority of regular phones have voice dialing built in and have for years.
Apple appears to be playing it’s “keep ‘em wanting more and sell ‘em upgrades” philosophy that is good for shareholders and bad for customers. They really don’t deserve all this brand loyalty.

the only thing the iPhone 3gs has is a video camera and that voice thing.

I would not mind paying a couple of extra dollars to have voice control for my 3G. But please dont let it be a 3GS only feature! I could not imagine it being hardware dependant since there is already semi remote control in the current gen (start, stop and next song)
They can very well have their development expenditures covered if they offered is a charged upgrade from the app store

Has anyone heard if voice control will be a part of the new 3.0 OS? I mean considering there isn’t much difference between the 3G and the S it seems like it would be a part of the new OS. Also just speculating because the S comes out a day after the new 3.0 OS is supposed to as well.

Only 3GS, why not 3G as well?, this is why I hate apple and their bull shit phone.
June 17th, 2009 at 7:08 am
Why did the first generation had to be excluded. I paid a lot of money for this phone and like other’s have said this does not go good with the loyalty for the iphone. Like someone else said why give it to them when you can upsell them. I have been a user since 2007 this does not go over well.

Why should you expect it to be included in an update to start with? when was the last time you upgraded a nokia or motorola phone? You dont, because you cant!
Think yourself LUCKY that apple provide updates that work with your existing handset. After all, they could just release a new phone and not have a firmware update at all.
June 17th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
I think it should be part of the OS 3.0 as well. In answer to kjbaker’s thoughts; Apple are marketing this not just as a phone maybe not even primarily as a phone, but as a device that meets most of your digital needs from browsing, email, mapping, gps, geocaching, media, ipod, productivity, creativity, gaming and checking to see if that shelf really is level. Thats what we bought into, that what we pay a premium for.
I would agree that a supplier is not obligated to keep their products updated indefinately, but Iphone users have been backed into a corner. Like many of you I bought my 3G on the day of release and signed up to the obligatory 18 months contract with the carrier. I would happily buy the 3GS and take another 18 months if the cost of opting out of the contract was not so high.
So ok, I am not a kid, I can wait 6 months for the new hardware, but then what? – 6 months after that Apple release Iphone 4 and I then need to wait 12 months to get out this contract, or pay a stupid amount to break contract again?
So thats where the frustration comes, Apple clearly left Voice control out to entice upgrades, but we are unable to upgrade any time soon, and when we do we have a worse scenario awaiting us further down the line.

Apple have to release new nuggets for the newer IPhone…so us poor saps upgrade ;-P x

I can’t believe they didn’t include voice control on OS 3.0. Up until last week if you looked at the Mac website they showed it as available. I just updated my phone to find out its not on there and I feel ripped off. If a company posts that they are going to have a feature included, they better have it. As far as I’m concerned this is a big let down form a company who has the ability to let us have it. Shame on their marketing department.

I want to turn OFF the voice dialing. I did, in the passcode lock section – but when I have the ipod running, and ask “who sings this” instead of telling me, it goes to call some random contact. Voice control of my ipod while driving is great, but not if I then have to scramble to cancel a call to somebody in the middle of the night while driving.
Has anybody else encountered odd behaviours like this? I know that you can not turn OFF voice control for the ipod (says so in the section in settings, general, passcode lock) but why does it still connect to the phone?
Bug?
