Is “iPhone 3GS” Apple’s codename for the next-gen iPhone?

Coming in on Monday morning it seems there is still some time left to get those final rumors in. The latest, which is coming courtesy of Daring Fireball is suggesting that the codename for today’s announcement is the iPhone 3GS. Of course, it remains unclear as to what the S actually stands for.

“One additional tidbit I’ve heard is the new hardware’s code name: iPhone 3GS. I’m not certain that’s what it’ll be officially named, but my hunch is yes. I have no idea what the S stands for.”

Of course, it was suggested, or more than likely guessed as being for “speed” however that does not seem to fit in with all the hype around video. Which according to John Gruber, the “video camera is going to be a major selling point.”

That said, adding an S to the current name would make sense in terms of that $99 iPhone that was also rumored. It could mean the iPhone 3GS will be a premium model with the current iPhone 3G remaining as available and settling in to handle the low-end market.

Otherwise, Daring Fireball is calling for the iPhone 3GS to have 15-20-percent better battery life as well as “significantly faster processors, twice the RAM, and twice the storage.”

It was also suggested that this would all come at the same price that the current iPhone 3G is selling for — $199 and $299. Of course that would be for 16GB and 32GB of storage instead of the current 8GB and 16GB models.

Additionally, the iPhone 3GS is rumored to be the “same” or “very similar” in terms of dimensions. Which means that accessories such as cases will still be able to fit. Thankfully we are less than a half a day away from the official announcement and we will finally learn what the new iPhone will really be. Personally I have my “iPhone 3G Upgrade Fund” all ready and waiting.
