Rumor alert. Aside from WWDC quickly approaching it seems that most of the iPhone related chatter on the Internet is in the form of rumors. Of course, that is only to be expected. Anyway, the latest is dealing with an iPhone that will offer four storage options to include a 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB model.
According to Engadget:
“4GB to 32GB — that’s one hell of a range, but we’re hearing from a trusted source that new iPhones in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities just garnered approval by the PCS Type Review Certification Board, the standards body responsible for certificating handsets for use with some carriers (AT&T, for instance).”
These low options, the 4GB and 8GB model sound a little fishy, especially considering all of the previous rumors suggesting that we will only see a 16 and 32GB capacity option. Not to mention, Apple has already done, and since discontinued a 4GB iPhone.
That said, there is also some further evidence that a 4GB model will be announced, that is assuming we can believe the images that were “leaked” from Fido. The Fido leak is reported to be the 2009 roadmap and it includes a 4GB iPhone that will sell (with a three year agreement) for $99.
If nothing else this could serve as a nice low-cost iPhone, but I am hoping that these features will not be across the board. Judging from the leaked image, it mentions that the 4GB iPhone will include support for quadband GSM, triband HSDPA and a 2-megapixel camera. But perhaps a little more interesting is the mention of iChat video calling, which would lead one to think that it may include a front facing camera.
I have said it before, and will say it again. I am thankful WWDC is getting close, because I for one would like to see these rumors come to an end, but in the meantime I guess we can have fun with them.

I hate all the waiting and guessing, you make a good argument for why they may include a smaller capacity iPhone in the range but I can’t really imagine them making that many ‘varieties’ of the iPhone.
There were rumors floating around about more colour choice for the iPhone as well but unless there is a really great new feature or improvement I don’t think I can justify getting a new one. I have fingers crossed for video, in which case the larger capacity would be necessary.

This morning in Columbus on WSYX 10 TV they do a Bloomberg News cast and it was reported that Apple will be releasing a 4GB iPhone 3G for $99 with less features.
