Though I am sure I will get some criticism for this one, mainly because of other free alternatives such as Pandora, I would like to file this into the rumors that I hope come true category. Anyway, according to a job posting over on Craigslist, Napster is currently looking for a software engineer that is experienced in “Mac/iPhone OS X Development.”
Basically, this could lead one to believe two things. One that Napster is working on an iPhone application. Two that Napster is working on an application for the Mac.
Bottom line, while the Mac app would be nice, the iPhone app should do really well when combined with their new $5 a month offer because that would give iPhone users a nice library to stream from as well as a few DRM free MP3’s that can be played on the iPhone.
For anyone not familiar, the new Napster deal allows you to stream and create custom playlists, listen to any of the 60 pre-configured Napster radio stations as well as get five DRM free MP3’s each month to keep. Basically you commit to buy five tracks each month and get to enjoy commercial free streaming.
