According to a recent posting over on the YouTube Blog, it seems that mobile phones, and more specifically the iPhone 3GS are responsible for a large increase in the uploading of videos directly from a phone.
“In the last six months, we’ve seen uploads from mobile phones to YouTube jump 1700%; just since last Friday, when the iPhone 3GS came out, uploads increased by 400% a day.”
Despite the 400% being a large number, personally I am not all that surprised by the increase for a few reasons. The first being the fact that sending video to YouTube, or even MobileMe from the iPhone is simple. Aside from entering your username and password on the first upload, all you have to do is shoot the video, click the “Send to YouTube” button and then add a title along with a description and tags.
Additionally, the increase is also kind of expected for another reason — people have a new toy and it seems to go without saying that they will want to play around and test it out.
Personally, I am more interested in seeing what this number settles in at after the new factor wears off a little and I only say that because I have even uploaded a few videos directly from my iPhone, which is something that I have never done before.
What about you, have any of the readers taken advantage of the ease of upload when it come to video from the iPhone 3GS? And perhaps a little more important, if you have, will you continue to do so?

400% increase in uploads from mobile devices? That doesn’t seem like a surprising thing – there aren’t that many mobile devices that can do this well.

I won’t use it often, I like to edit my footage before I post it to any video sharing site, including YouTube

I wont use it much, but then again I dont post to YouTube in the first place. However I tend to agree with you, the “newness” factor will lead to that dramatic number on the first weekend more than any sustained trend.
Overall, I think these type of social sites will greatly benefit from phones like the iPhone.
And Jawn – Of course you can edit from your iPhone (kinda) I expect in the next OS they will make it more robust than it is now and make it actually usable which will be interesting/
