Apple offers iPhone OS 3.1 beta, iPhone SDK 3.1 beta to developers [UPDATED]

It has not been all that long since the iPhone OS 3.0 was released, and now it looks like we are going to be moving directly to OS 3.1 as opposed to seeing a smaller point release of OS 3.0.1.

Just recently Apple released both the iPhone OS 3.1 beta along with the SDK 3.1 beta to developers.

Overall, not much going on here for the non-developer. According to what we can tell, it looks like some are reporting that MMS is enabled by default, even for AT&T users here in the US, however the messages are still not working as you would expect. Of course, if you ask me that is not all that surprising. Personally, I would imagine that an update for MMS messaging (at least for AT&T customers) would come in the form of a carrier update and not in OS 3.1.

Additionally, I found some details claiming that you can now paste telephone numbers into the default dialer, which by itself is slightly interesting. However, it was also noted that if you paste a number like 1-800-My-Apple, it will automatically convert the number. That sounds like a feature that may come in handy from time to time.

Anyway, while this does not mean OS 3.1 is going to be available for everyone just yet, it does mean that we are getting closer.

[UPDATE] According to a post over at Redmond Pie, it looks like iPhone OS 3.1 beta offers a few additional updates, the first of which is something that sounds good to me.

* Video editing on iPhone 3GS wont overwrite the clip over the original when you are editing a clip.
* iPhone will now vibrate whenever you switch to the mode where you can move and arrange icons on the iPhone home screen.
* “Fraud Protection” toggle has been added to settings under Safari.
* iPhone boot time is now faster.
* Voice Control over Bluetooth.
* New APIs to enable third party apps to access videos and edit them.
