Once again an App Store story that no one wants to hear. According to the details that I have seen so far, GV Mobile (the Google Voice app) is going to be removed from the App Store because it is duplicating features that are already on the iPhone.
“Richard Chipman from Apple just called – he told me they’re removing GV Mobile from the App Store due to it duplicating features that the iPhone comes with (Dialer, SMS, etc). He didn’t actually specify which features, although I assume the whole app in general. He wouldn’t send a confirmation email either – too scared I would post it.”
Basically, to put this plainly — it sucks.
As of now, I have not seen any other reports, but am wondering if this means all of the other Google Voice apps are also going to be pulled.
My question now is what can we do to stop this from happening, both now and in the future. Keep in mind, this is not an app that has been submitted and is awaiting approval, this is an app that has been around for a while. Not to mention, according to the App Store listing, it has received an average of four stars based on 470 comments for all versions of the app as well as an average of four stars based on 246 comments for the current version of the app.
As of this posting, the app is still available both in the paid ($2.99) (App Store link) and free version (App Store link).
[UPDATE]: Unfortunately, if you are reading this as an “updated” post, then GV Mobile, along with the other Google Voice dialer apps are no longer available.

This has ATT’s filthy paws all over it. Google Voive’s promise of carrier independence

Let’s try this again.
This has ATT’s filthy paws all over it. Google Voice’s promise of carrier independence and free SMS is a direct threat to ATT and their stranglehold over iPhone users and cell users in general.

I read this too late, I tried to get it and it was no longer available. Wish I had known about it sooner. Hopefully it will be available on cydia soon.

OK, So I have owned the paid app for a while and love it. I have not synced in a couple of days. Does this mean the app will disappear from my iPhone or will it continue to work or do I have to not sync? I don’t want to lose it the next time I sync.

Andrew, It should not affect those who already have the app. I have synced since it was removed and nothing has changed for me.

Will the GV app available on Appulous work on a unhacked 3GS phone? I downloaded the app as it sounded interesting based on the above discussion but not sure what to do next …

Hi, I bought the paid version before it was removed from the App Store. I having a problem with the app. Keeps giving my “Invalid Credentials” so I can’t sign in now. Is anyone else having this problem? Is the tech support of any kind? Thanks…
