iTwitter app updated to version 1.1, now with Push Notifications and a catch

If you are looking for a Twitter app that offers Push Notification, then look no further than iTwitter. The app was recently updated (now at version 1.1) and has added support for Push Notifications — but it may not be a good setup for everyone.

According to the description within the App Store, the notifications work “between iTwitter users for mentions and DMs.” So, take that and what we have is an app that will almost give us what we want. The app does offer Push Notifications, however they are coming with a catch.

First, the notifications are only for @ mentions and DMs, which means that regular tweets from those that you follow cannot be pushed. So far, that is not all that bad, personally I am not interested in having every tweet pushed to me anyway. That said, the big catch is that for the Push Notifications to work, they have to be coming from a fellow iTwitter user.

Given that, I am not sure I am willing to really consider this as a viable option for Push Notifications. Sure, it looks like a nice app, and it is also available for free, however I do not know anyone else personally who actually uses iTwitter.

Of course, on the flip side, this could be enough to convince some to switch, after all it does have a pretty decent list of features.

  • Handle multiple Twitter accounts
  • View your Twitter timeline, replies, and direct messages
  • Manage your favorite tweets
  • Browse your following and followers
  • Compose new tweets
  • Fast Retweet
  • Reply directly to tweets and send direct messages
  • Follow and un-follow people
  • Inline TwitPic image viewer
  • Upload pictures to TwitPic
  • Unparralleled scrolling performance
  • Twitlonger supported
  • Uses secure connection (https)
  • Custom searches
  • Nearby searches
  • Save your favorite searches
  • Landscape keyboard
  • Conversational threaded tweets

Given that, I went ahead and installed it on my iPhone. I am not sure it will be able to replace my current favorite (TweetDeck) however it seems to be worthy of a chance.

Well… if PA works well, then I’ll keep using twitterrific and iTwitter TOO: so I’ll have a complete application plus PA from my tweets :) (it’s free, anyway)
