Jailbreaking news: Dev Team releases redsn0w for Linux and the iPhone 3GS

Following the release of purplera1n, the Dev Team has decided to release an updated version of their own jailbreaking tool — redsn0w. If you remember back, they had originally announced they were going to hold off until OS 3.1 was available, however according to the most recent post on their blog.

“We realize we upset some folks (e.g. existing 3GS owners) with our earlier announcement that we wanted to hold onto the 3GS iBoot-family hole until 3.1 was out.  Our aim there was to get as many people as possible onboard (within reason of course) before revealing the hole, since Apple will fix it immediately.  But all of that became moot when the purplera1n release was made, since it uses the same hole.”

Of course, this latest version of redsn0w not only offers the awaited 3GS support, it is also the first redsn0w release that supports Linux. Basically this means that you can now jailbreak just about any device on any operating system.

Additionally, if you went ahead (like myself) and used purplera1n, nothing to worry about, but you may want to check Cydia as Mobile Substrate and Winterboard have also seen recent updates of their own.

Finally, if you were holding out for the Dev Team release before you went ahead with the jailbreak, then you can grab a torrent for redsn0w (as well as ultrasn0w) by clicking here.
