Next-gen iPod Touch to have camera + microphone?

Wired.com reports that they have a “well connected source” that confirms the the next generation iPod Touch will in fact be receiving a camera as well as a microphone (Robert first introduced this rumor here on iPhonefreak a few weeks ago, article link.)

According to Wired,

“A well-connected source tells us those rumors are on the money, and that Apple’s factories in China are already manufacturing iPod Touch models with integrated cameras and microphones. An Apple spokesman declined to comment when reached by phone.”

This same source also hints at the possibility of the new devices hitting store shelves as early as September or October, just in time for the holiday season.

Were Apple to do this, they would essentially be releasing an iPhone with pretty much everything but the phone itself (not to mention a very expensive AT&T contract.) An iPod Touch with a camera would probably be an instant competitor with the Flip Mino as was proven earlier this week, article link. As Wired points out, combining Skype with this new microphone-enabled device would virtually eliminate the need for a home phone (if you have WiFi, that is.)

I have the 2nd generation iPod Touch and the only thing I would like to see added is a camera. I have no pressing need (there is a want) for constant connectivity. My office, home, and local café have Wi-Fi and that works well enough for me. With the addition of a camera I would be able to take those “around town” photos without the need to carry around my Nikon.
