Despite MobileMe working great for some (myself included) there are others that seem to be having a horrible experience with the service. Given that, I am going to suggest checking out NuevaSync which will let you sync your Google Calendar and Google Contacts over-the-air. Additionally, NuevaSync also offers something that many (myself included) have been waiting for — push Gmail.
On the plus side, NeuvaSync is available at a much lower price than MobileMe — it is just $25 a year. Of course, there is also a free option available but it is much more limited.
Free Sync Service
- Sync calendar events
- Sync contacts
- 11 calendar limit
Premium ($25/yr) adds:
- ‘Push’ Sync your Email
- Up to 50 calendars
- Priority technical support
- Dedicated servers
Now, like I mentioned earlier, MobileMe works great for me, so given that I cannot offer any personal insight as to how well the NuevaSync service actually works. In other words I would suggest making sure you have a backup of you calendar and contacts available before you begin syncing — just in case.
On the other hand, if you are satisfied with your current calendar and contact setup and are really just looking for push Gmail, then I would suggest holding out for the GPush app, that is assuming Apple approves it for entry into the App Store.

Why would you pay for something Google offers for free?
You don’t get push but who cares you can have it check your mail and I am sure Push will come soon.

Personally, even taking the calendar and contact sync out, I would say at $25 a year this is a good deal. Plus you could always cancel once (if) Google begins offering Push email for the iPhone.
That aside though, for some it is a must have, or at least a big consideration, for example those who are considering switching over from a BlackBerry.

I’ve been using NuevaSync for contact and calendar for less than a year now and it’s been great. Recently I tried Google’s own contact/calendar sync over Exchange and had a very bad experience over the 3 months that I used it for: Duplicates and none-synced data attributes in contacts.
I’ve started using their Gmail push for a week now and have been very satisfied. However they still have some issue on some types of emails (a very small proportion).
