Prowl brings Growl notifications to the iPhone

A new app to enter the App Store will bring your desktop Growl notifications to your iPhone. The app is called Prowl and is currently selling for $2.99.

For those unfamiliar with Growl, it is a desktop application that gives you a pop-up alert letting you know “when things happen.” Basically it gives you an alert for items such as a new email coming in, a new IM message as well as alerting you when file transfers or downloads finish among many other things.

In order to run the iPhone app Prowl, you will need to be running Growl on your desktop. Currently Growl is available for the Mac (OS X 10.4 or higher) and Windows, however as of now the Windows version is still in beta.

Pretty much, this can be considered Push notifications for your iPhone on steroids. I will say, that although it seems the possibilities are endless and full, this app will require some customization and tweaking based on your needs, because otherwise you may become overwhelmed with alerts coming from your desktop (or laptop) computer at home. Thankfully, Prowl will allow to you to control the priority level as well as types of alerts that you receive on your iPhone.

Bottom line, while interesting, I think it may be a little overkill for my needs. That said, I would love to hear about your experience, that is should you decide to use Prowl.
