Navigon quietly extends the $69.99 sale price until August 31, also updates MobileNavigator with new features

When the Navigon MobileNavigator GPS app for North America was initially released it came with a $69.99 price tag that was supposed to be valid until August 15.

Well, in a little bit of good news for anyone (like myself) that was holding out for the TomTom offering before making a commitment, the special price for the Navigon app has been extended until August 31.

In addition to the extension on the price cut, Navigon has also rolled out the first update to the app. This brings the app up to version 1.1.0 and with that comes;

  • Navigon’s route planning function known from the companies PND line that enables users to plan a route with several destinations.
  • Additional map view options.
  • Call POI function (call the number of a point of interest or save it to your contacts).
  • POI Filter (allows you to manage the POIs shown on the map).
  • Optimized volume control when using the Navigon navigation and the iPod funtion of the iPhone at the same time.

Of course, judging from many of the comments that I have been seeing in regards to the TomTom pricing I am not sure that anyone is going to be happy paying even the $70 for Navigon. Personally, I thought these apps were going to fall somewhere closer to the $50 price range, but am willing to spend more. Now I have to decide which option to choose, although I will say that I am leaning towards Navigon.

    I’m sure that Google will have a free, web-based, option available very soon. Oh, wait, they DO. Why would anyone pay these prices for software that is only a slightly more convenient version of something that has been available for free on the web for years?

    Because what Google Maps does and what turn by turn GPS’s do is DIFFERENT. It’s much better to have a program guide you turn by turn, than to have to continually look at the directions on your iphone and have to watch for street names. No comparison.

    I have used Google Maps on my iPhone many times in the past to find my way. I will say that it works great when I am a passenger, but not so convenient when it is my turn behind the wheel, such as when I am alone. A regular GPS, or in this case a GPS app with audible turn-by-turn directions is far superior (safer) if just for that one feature.

    I have the Navigon app for the IPHONE, it works great for me so far. I also have a NAVIGON dash mounted GPS, that works great as well (it includes free traffic, where as the IPHONE does not). I am still working with both to see if I can replace my Full GPS with the IPHONE version, jury is still out on that one. But I do recommend the IPHONE NAVIGON APP.
