No Google Voice on the iPhone, no problem. Google Voice functionality set to return as a web application

Sure, Apple (and possibly AT&T) may be in charge when it comes to the App Store, and in terms of Google Voice that means the users are the ones that are suffering. Anyway, it seems that Google is going to take the Google Voice app denial in stride and make a return to a way that Apple once touted as a viable option for applications — web apps.

According to Google, they are currently working on a web app and have mentioned that it will be able to offer the “same features as the rejected app.” Of course, the one difference is that it will not be a ‘native” app, and while that is disappointing in theory, a nice “Add To Home Screen” link should make it feel a little more native.

Moving on, as of now Google has not made any mention of when the Google Voice web app will be ready, but on the positive side, it does not seem like Apple is going to begin blocking individual websites on the iPhone which means they will not be able to take Google Voice away again.

In the meantime, don’t forget it is still possible to make a Google Voice call on your iPhone. Granted the options available are not perfect, but at least you can make a call and have your Google Voice number displayed as opposed to your cell number.

As far as making the call, all you have to do it dial your Google Voice number and then press option 2. Additionally, there is currently a decent, albeit limited iPhone formatted webpage that will allow you to make a Google Voice call.

The current Google Voice mobile website is a pain in the ass to use. I’m really hoping that Google will put together a really nice web app. It really shouldn’t matter that the app is browser-based (at least if you are syncing contacts with Google Apps)as the browser app would already be open to the Google Voice page, and should therefore open faster than a native app would. It would be the next best thing to having GV Mobile native on the phone.

The day Apple decides to attempt blocking individual websites will be the day I file a class action lawsuit against them. Enough is enough.
