UK retailer Handtec reveals TomTom car kit pricing

We have know about the TomTom Navigation app for the iPhone since back in June, however details such as pricing and availability have since remained a mystery. Well as of now, the pricing of the app is still unknown, however UK retailer Handtec has recently listed the GPS car mount accessory and is showing a price of £113.85 (roughly $195 US).

Honestly, that is a bit more than I would be willing to pay, not saying the mount is worth less, just more than I am willing to shell out. But then again, on the other hand, this price has yet to be confirmed by TomTom and could just be a pre-order price set in anticipation by Handtec.

There is also a little confusion in the product description and it almost reads as if that price includes both the mount and the app, but if that is the case I am not sure how that would work unless you are going to be given a promo code to download the app for free after purchase.

The TomTom solution combines two new TomTom products to provide users with state of the art in-car navigation on their iPhone 3G:

  • The TomTom navigation application for iPhone; an Apple version of TomTom’s award-winning turn-by-turn navigation software, including IQ Routes and latest maps from Tele Atlas;
  • The TomTom car kit for iPhone; a specially developed car kit for secure docking, enhanced GPS performance, clear voice instructions, hands-free calling and in-car charging.

Given that, if this is a combined price, that may help to change my mind a little in terms of being expensive.

Additionally, aside from the pricing, other details about the mount include features such as an “EasyPort” mount, a built-in speaker, volume control, microphone for taking calls, a USB connector as well as an audio-out jack to connect the mount directly to your car stereo system.

    The app just appeared in the App Store for $99.99. Early reviews are mixed but mostly positive. The worst shortcoming seems to be that the name of the next street to turn at isn’t spoken.

    Disingenuously, Tom Tom did not make clear in their early adopted mailing today that the car kit will be sold separately at an undisclosed price.

    The car kit does more than hold the phone. It includes electronics to enhance GPS accuracy.

    So the combo will probably list for $300 in the U.S. As expensive as a high end dedicated Tom Tom.

    Maybe resellers will steeply discount the car kit.
