YouMail app now available in the App Store

I have pretty much always had a love/hate, well mostly hate relationship with voicemail. There was also once a time that I did not have an iPhone, of course that was before an iPhone was even available, and during that time I relied on a service called YouMail to make my voicemail experience a little better.

I would imagine that lots of iPhone users (like myself) stopped using YouMail when we were given visual voicemail on the iPhone, however for those that remained true to YouMail — you now have a dedicated app available.

For those unfamiliar with the YouMail service, they have long been offering visual voicemail and doing so with a nice web interface that gives you the option to manage your voicemail both on your phone and also online. Additionally, they also have a few levels of service that range from free up to $27.99 a month depending on your needs.

Anyway, getting back to the iPhone app. YouMail users will now be able to “see, play, read, manage, and easily share YouMail voicemail, right from your iPhone.” Additionally, the app will also allow users to manage other aspects such as recording and changing greetings.

The app is currently available in the App Store and is a free download. As someone who regularly switches between phones (currently an iPhone 3GS, G1 and most recently a Pre) this service would be nice to have as a central place for voicemail, but for me it has come a little to late thanks to Google Voice, which not only gave me a central location and web interface for my voicemail, but also one number that rings all phones.

Despite that, I would not hesitate to recommend the service as it treated me very well in the past. If any readers check out the app, please leave some comments below sharing your experience.

Doesn’t this app sound like it “duplicate features that come with the iPhone” (read: GV debacle)

  2. josh Says:

GV Mobile looks very close to the iPhone phone app, this does not. (Not the color scheme, but most of the functionality and screens are similar)

Not saying it’s right, but this is probably less of an offense in Apple’s eyes.

I think that is a big part of the issue, the inconsistency and the lack of rules. I would think that any voicemail related app would duplicate functionality, but who am I to say.

Also in regards to the GV issue, I do not think it is as much an issue with the app as behind the scenes things that are being taken out by way of the apps.

…wow… made a constructive comment that I guess wasn’t liked, it’s been ‘awaiting moderation’ since 8/5 — it’s almost like this is the ‘AppStore’ approval process of online posting :(
