Apple approves the Google-Voice-like Line2 app

Apple approves the Google-Voice-like Line2 app

In a strange twist, a new app called Line2 has been approved for entry into the App Store. I say strange twist because although it is not exactly like Google Voice, it does offer some pretty similar features — not to mention it would seems as if this duplicates some of the core functions of the iPhone.

According to the App Store description, Line2 allows the user to “add a second number with voicemail to your iPhone.”

It goes on to state that you can;

“Separate your business and personal calls on one phone with separate caller ID, voicemail, call history, and contacts.”

Strange, but this seems to be quite similar to what I was doing with Google Voice and the GV Mobile app.

Anyway, Line2 will allow you to set up the service directly from your iPhone and gives you the option to choose either a local or toll-free number. Any outbound calls that you make will show your new number as the caller ID and offers international calling for as low as 2 cents per minute. The one item that it does not support is SMS messaging.

Finally, Line2 is not a free service, the app sells for $0.99 and also requires a $19.95 monthly subscription which allows for unlimited calling to the US and Canada.

Other features of Line2 include an auto-attendant, 6-number simul-ring, call screening, after hours settings, PC based calling as well as voicemail by email.
