In the world of iPhone gaming, you have a plethora of genres to choose from. Word, puzzle, strategy, adventure, action, shooter and the list goes on. But in my book, there’s only one genre that reigns supreme, shooter! But guns and other human weapons get boring after awhile. Sure you’re initially fascinated at the sight of blood pouring from a zombies head. But you can only blast lead so much. So why not give magic a try? And we’re not talking about disappearing cards or an endless hankie either. We’re talking about white-knuckle, fatal magic!
MonsterKill, from Origin8 games is exactly the type of game I love. It’s a survival type game in which you have to hold off an attacking horde of vampires, mummies, trolls, Frankensteins and more (I didn’t know there was more than one Frankenstein). But you don’t do it the old fashioned way with torches or guns. No you use magic!
In normal mode, your goal is to guard your gate for 20 grueling levels against the oncoming tides of monsters. You start out with one spell, but have the opportunity to earn more as you go along. You earn money and tokens by killing monsters and maintaining your safety. You use money to upgrade your defenses and repair your gate. Try to be frugal with your cash and save it until you truly need it. You use tokens to upgrade and buy spells. So if you get tired of your boring beginner spell, safe up and buy an expert one!
Along with normal game play, you have the option of endless and onslaught mode. In endless mode, you defend your gate for as long as possible against a never ending amount of monsters. This mode isn’t for the beginners, but can provide hours of entertainment if you’re good enough! The onslaught mode is a little different. You have no gate to defend, instead you are given 20 token to spend on whatever spells you wish. Then you have to defend yourself against 101 monsters. This mode is addicting, and a great way to see all the different spells.
The game play and graphics for this game are near perfect. They’re just right to be entertaining, but won’t interfere. The controls are self explanatory, and you can pick them up fairly quickly. This game is, in it’s own respect, challenging. But don’t let that deter you. For the $.99 it’s definitely worth getting!
Verdict: 5/5 Stars
