Perhaps in an effort as to not be outdone by TomTom, Navigon has unveiled a car kit of their own to accompany the already available MobileNavigator app for the iPhone.
Unfortunately, releasing a car kit is where the similarity is going to stop because according to the details that we have seen so far, the Navigon mount is not going to be quite as high-tech as the mount from TomTom. In other words — the mount will not have built-in GPS.
Instead, the mount coming from Navigon will simply feature a suction cup mount and adjustable holder. Of course, the price will also be more reasonable — it was noted as being “less than 40 Euros” which is currently about $57 US.
As far as a time frame of availability, nothing exact here, other than sometime in October. Given that it looks like Navigon may beat TomTom to market on not only the software, but also the accompanying hardware.
Additionally, it was also stated that while this first version of the car kit will not be GPS equipped, a future version may be.

I’m confused. The iPhone has had an internal GPS since the release of the iPhone 3G last year, so why does it need an external one?!

The internal GPS on the iPhone is not as accurate or reliable as an external one.
