I am a long time eBay user and for the most part eBay fan and I know that I am far from being alone in that thought. Given that I was very happy when eBay released their iPhone/iPod touch app, but I will say that I have not yet used it to actually make a purchase. Instead my use has been limited to checking a few auctions that I was monitoring as well as keeping track of a few items that I was selling. But it seems I may be closer to being alone in my use of the app because according to eBay CEO John Donahoe the app has already driven $400 million in sales.
Granted, that $400 million is not anywhere as big as eBay’s total $59.7 billion from last year, but that said, is seems releasing a free iPhone app was a smart move. Which given that it seems to only make sense that the development of the app will continue. According to Donahoe, the app will be improved with new features “soon.”
Of course, that $400 million is reached a little easier by some of the larger purchases that have been made. It seems that not everyone is buying lower priced collectibles. It was confirmed that a Bentley, a $150,000 boat and a Lamborghini have all sold by way of the eBay Mobile app. Man, how I would love to not only buy a Lamborghini, but to be able to spend $350,000 for it — from an app on my iPhone.
In total, it was noted that about 4.6 million people have downloaded the eBay Mobile app.
