Jailbreaking with blackra1n, my experience

Jailbreaking with blackra1n, my experience

I cannot say this will work for everyone, so in no way is this intended to be an end-all tutorial, but that said, these are the steps that I followed to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS running OS 3.1.2 using blackra1n. And yes I am aware my situation is a little abnormal because I generally use a Mac.

  • Updated my iPhone 3GS to firmware 3.1.2 using iTunes on my iMac.
  • Downloaded blackra1n on my Windows 7 based netbook
  • Plugged my iPhone into the netbook and launched blackra1n
  • Clicked the “make in ra1n” button
  • Waited while blackra1n did its thing. Saw “entering recovery” “running” and finally “done, wait for reboot”
  • Clicked Ok on the “Enjoy your jailbroken iPhone” prompt
  • Clicked the blackra1n icon on my iPhone
  • Clicked on the option to install Cydia, then waited for that to run and finish
  • Clicked on the option to uninstall blackra1n from my iPhone
  • Began reinstalling my jailbroken apps

After that was all done, just for good measure I plugged my iPhone back into my iMac and did a backup and sync. All things considered, the process of running blackra1n was quick and easy. It took me longer to find a spare sync cable to use on my netbook (I was to lazy to unplug from my iMac) than it did to jailbreak.

so you updated to the official 3.1.2 fw and don’t care about unlocking?

  2. Robert Nelson Says:

Yup, official firmware. Personally I am not interested in the unlock. I have always used my iPhone with AT&T.

I bought my Iphone 3GS with 3.1 already on the phone (i believe) two weeks ago. I’ve already upgraded to 3.1.2. Is it safe to use blackra1n on my phone?

  6. Terrell jones Says:

Yea I upgraded to 3.1.2 than unlocked my 3gs with this jailbreak

  7. Robert Nelson Says:

@Abed, Once you are jailbroken again, you install Cydia, then your apps can all be installed on a one by one basis.

@Dean, Yes blackra1n will jailbreak your officially upgraded (3.1.2) 3GS

If I would restore from my last backup before I jailbreak my iphone, will apple know I did jailbreak the iphone?

  9. Bill Says:

So you’re saying this new tool will jailbreak without modifying the baseband? I’m not the least bit interested in unlocking (and, honestly, have my issues with those that have – read your contract, people), but since I still have a 2G iPhone (practically abandoned now by Apple and AT&T) I thought I’d give jailbreaking a whirl again. I haven’t jailbroken since 1.1.

Has any succesully copied crack ipa files after using blackra1n? This is my first jailbreak and I’m confused about apps I’m downloading (Like Dopey’s stuff or CORE’s stuff). When I add to itunes the sync fails.. help, please.

  15. Robert Nelson Says:

    @ipodhunting

Sorry I cannot comment on any cracked ipa files. I only use the official App Store or Cydia for my apps. Nothing cracked here, not sure if they will work.

    - Download and keep BlackRa1n.exe in your C:\
    - Right click on BlackRa1n.exe –> properties–> Compatibility -> check the run this program in compatibility mode for… XP and also check the Run as admin option.

    - Upgrade to 3.1.2 and restore with your latest back up(sync contacts etc etc)
    - Close itunes

    - Go to control panel (classic view)-> User Accounts ->Manage another account -> Create new account -> Select Administrator option and create a new account
    - Click on the newly created account and select Create password to set a password.

    - Shutdown your system
    - Boot your system
    - Login with your new admin account
    - Let the windows complete setting up your desktop

    - Now connect your iphone via usb
    - Right click on BlackRa1n.exe and run as admin ( though already set to run as admin in properties, just making sure.. this is what i did)
    - Click on ‘Make it Ra1n”
    - Sit back and relax.. (you have to click on a lengthy message from BlacRa1n during the process to say ‘OK’ ) GeoHot screen will appear and reboot ur iphone.. after that its all simple.. check ur iphone for blackra1n app..

The blackra1n executable process hangs when iTunes detects the iphone in dfu mode and will open trying to restore it. But during the last step itunes will try to open.. but because of new user, it will get stuck on license agreement page..

I found out that the GPS problem was caused only by balckra1n jailbreak. I restored my iPhone and GPS was working fine, but right after the jailbreak it wasn't working anymore.

Only thing that helped me with non-working GPS was complete restore with PwnageTool.
